Because my business is in my father's honor, I thought it was fitting to create a gallery of some of his work, and display some of the shots that inspire me in my own work. While he is no longer here to guide me with my lens, he is still here to guide me through his, and I refer to his photographs all the time. So here are some of my personal favorites ... not of his commercial work, but of what he loved the most: his family and his beloved Rockaway Beach, Oregon. These were uploaded as they are - weathered, creased and a little tattered, from the days of manual film cameras and darkrooms. He had a million color shots, but he preferred black and white, as do I. While some of these are over 50 years old, I still get lost in them, remembering how he would always say "good" photos are pretty to look at at, but the best photos pull you in, making you feel like you're right there. Absolutely, Dad. I couldn't have said it better, myself.
Photography aside, John was a classically trained pianist, wowing audiences while playing piano for a range of institutions and venues, from jazz trios to big bands, and even for the Betty White Show. (He would be so embarrassed to know I just wrote that! He never praised himself, despite his accomplishments.)
But beyond all that, my dad was the funniest person I have ever known. His delivery was dry and quick, and his unexpected one-liners still make me laugh to this day when I remember them.
When any of us talk about Dad, we always laugh, quoting the things he'd say. ... I couldn't wrap up this tribute without mentioning his humor, because it was as legendary as his photography.
He was my best friend.
